Challenge
A road construction and paving company that has been a driving force in it’s state’s growth and prosperity for 75 years needed to control operational costs and maintain all of the company’s heavy equipment. This encompassed everything from equipment location and tracking, to preventive and ongoing equipment maintenance. The company found the best solution with a combination of software from Agilis Systems and hardware from Feeney Wireless.
Solution
Working with Feeney Wireless, they selected the Sierra Wireless Pinpoint X to provide all the information supplied from the vehicle, and the Agnik DMP, connected to the on-board data computer and to the Pinpoint X modem, that automatically reports any alerts or diagnostic conditions every 10 minutes. They then chose to use two different web-based software modules from Agilis Systems- SmartLOCATE™ and SmartDIAGNOSTICS™. SmartLOCATE™ provides the current and historical location of each vehicle, it is able to identify in real-time the speed of each vehicle and how long they have been stationary. The company also uses the geofence feature to track vehicle’s movement inside and outside of authorized areas, such as construction sites, production facilities, and quarries.Through the use of the PinPoint X and the attached I/O cable, they are able to monitor the PTO (Power Take Off) in their dump trucks. By combining this information with SmartLOCATE™ data, Agilis is able to display the time and place of each dump for each vehicle. The use of SmartDIAGNOSTICS™ gives a real-time look into operating information such as engine fault codes, oxygen sensor reading, fuel consumption, and driver behavior.
Results
With Agilis Systems and Feeney Wireless, the paving company has more effectively managed its fleet and daily operations. SmartDIAGNOSTICS™, combined with Agnik DMP and Pinpoint X systems, is used to pro-actively identify diagnostic and maintenance issues at the earliest stages, which reduces fleet downtime, lowers maintenance costs, and reduces fuel consumption. SmartLOCATE™ offers the company the ability to monitor the location of each driver and their driving behavior, allowing them to correct unsafe driving practices in a timely manner. They are also able to monitor how long it takes a load to enter the spreaders, to avoid incorrect disposals of cold planed material, and to prevent movement outside of authorized areas. The company’s prevention of problems helps to reduce operational costs and improve efficiency.
