Gulf of Mexico, June, 2010: Agilis Systems, a St. Louis-based company is partnering with Pathfinders’ Task Force to provide emergency management personnel with mission-critical data relating to the containment and clean-up efforts in the BP oil spill.
Pathfinders’ is equipping over 500 personnel in the Gulf with inexpensive cell phones loaded with Agilis software to track the deployment and maintenance of oil containment booms. Booms are cylindrical tubes that are 100 feet in length that float on the surface of the water and are anchored in position. Throughout the day, fishermen fill out electronic forms that capture pertinent information such as length of boom installed, length of boom repaired or environmental issue discovered. Each form is also stamped with the date, time and location of the device at the time of submittal, providing valuable information on the location and amount of work completed as well as identifying follow up tasks to be performed. The application also allows the fishermen to capture photos to document their findings.
“We trained people in 20 minutes on how to use this software and we were able to do more than 17,000 assessments in the last 60 days – all geocoded and time stamped,” said Scott Lewis, President of Pathfinder’s Task Force. Now that the software has been proven out, additional Parish’s are lining up to deploy the system. “Clean up operations now have real time data on boom positions, distressed wildlife sightings, oil location and other important incident reports for immediate follow up and response,” added Lewis regarding the use of the software system.
“We are proud to be a part of the ongoing effort to clean up the oil spill in the Gulf,” said Dave Barford, CEO, Agilis Systems. “We are hopeful that in working with our partner Pathfinders’ we can help bring relevant, real time data to those leading the oil cleanup efforts.”
